Why does northern New York get called “upstate New York”? I’ve never heard anyone refer to upstate California or upstate Utah…

Maybe it’s because there’s a New York City in New York State…and if someone just says “New York”, most people will assume it’s referring to the city.
Good point. I’m not aware of any Utah City, and California City is pretty tiny, so there’s no confusion there.
Hmmm…. Yeah… but there’s no Upstate Oklahoma or Upstate Kansas…
Outside of America, Oklahoma City and Kansas City aren’t really know. NYC is famous, though.
I don’t think that that would really have any effect on what locals call the area, though.
